I gained favor with her heart, but could not reach her mind, and she remained within her father's gripping claws, preparing for the inevitable day when she would leave for her life of solitude on some plantation or other. I would not be denied. My sights were set, and as it does so often do when I fixate, the obsession drove me nearly mad. I developed an immediate disdain for Anna's father for pulling her away from me, and even my new friend Edmund distanced himself, sensing that any reminder of him would also be a reminder of her. They closed the house on the island, and Edmund began working exclusively from Charleston.  I had spent so much time with death that I had almost forgotten what it was like to be alive. I was good to my word, and not just to Anna. I was noticed by my superior officers and before long, I was promoted to artificer, a non-commissioned officer. William was very jealous as he had no such luck in promotion.
